I thought Aveda just made hair care products. Now I find out there's so much more. What is the full story of Aveda?

Aveda Corporation is the Minneapolis based manufacturer of hair care, skincare, color cosmetics, plant perfumes and lifestyle products; all created with pure plant & flower essences. The CEO and Founder, Horst Rechelbacher, has pursued the study of wellness, it's origins in Eastern and Western science and philosophy, and it's relationship to the essences and elements found in nature. How do you say "Aveda" and what does it mean?

The correct pronunciation is "ah-vay-da." It means "knowledge of nature" in Sanskrit - derived from the Ayurvedic healing tradition in India. It also means "health" in ancient Greek. The principles of ayurveda--the science of longevity--are applied throughout Aveda's line of hair care, skincare, color cosmetics, perfumes & lifestyle products.

Does Aveda have an environmental policy?

Indeed we do! As a matter of fact, our environmental standards are a key point of difference for Aveda and is an essential element of our company mission. Our policy is based on the CERES Principles for corporate environmental responsibility. Our commitment is to be ecologically responsible and create a sustainable future for all generations. We strive to work in partnership with other companies, nonprofit organizations and policy makers to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility. Aveda was the first company to sign the CERES Principles for corporate environmental responsibility in 1989. CERES stands for Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies. The 10 CERES Principles represent the most comprehensive corporate environmental guidelines ever developed by leading environmental groups, socially responsible investors and others for businesses. Aveda is committed to following these principles, from protecting our biosphere and conserving energy to producing the annual CERES public report on our environmental progress. We also do not conduct or endorse animal testing, and we strive to avoid all animal by-products as ingredients. Aveda is also working towards a goal of no waste. Aveda and Infinite Angles have developed progressive environmental programs in education, inspection, purchasing and recycling. Where do you find all the flowers and plants to make your products?

We search the world for plants organically grown in a sustainable manner. We seek farmers and botanical specialists who grow the plants we need without petrochemical fertilizers or pesticides whenever possible. We gather some of these raw materials (and the knowledge to use them) from indigenous cultures around the globe. These partnerships with indigenous cultures benefits both sides; ancient knowledge is passed on for the health and well-being for all peoples and we in turn are helping to preserve these indigenous cultures, giving them an opportunity for growth and sustainability. For instance, Aveda has a unique business partnership with the Yawanawa Indians of Brazil. Located in a remote region of the Amazon rain forest, the Yawanawa are working toward their economic sustainability, by planting Bixa - a bush-like tree with pods containing seeds that can be crushed into red powder. The Yawanawa sell the product to Aveda and other companies. The ingredient was the inspiration for Aveda's Uruku Lip Colors, and is a perfect natural coloring agent.

I hear Aveda lets you design your own aroma. How?

Aveda has designed a system for consumers to create their own signature aroma using Aveda Singular Notes. Singular Notes contain pure essential oils, distilled from freshly harvested flowers and plants found throughout the world. Infinite Angles Concept Salon carry 17 Singular Notes in a variety of plant and flower derivations. From the warm & soothing aroma of Vanilla, to the uplifting & soft notes of Jasmine, more than ever, people are rediscovering the benefits of using plant products, rather than petrochemically derived synthetic ingredients, for skin, body and environmental care. Aveda Singular Notes offer the benefits and aromas of plants and flowers in their purest form with the opportunity to blend the individual essences into personalized aromas. Singular Notes may also be worn alone at pulse points on the body, to envelope the body in the aroma of a single plant or flower, or may be added to any Adaptive aroma-free body and bath product. Each Singular Note offers distinct benefits to beautify, relax and revitalize the body and mind. Taking the customization concept one step further, Aveda has recently launched a new product line called Aveda Personal Blends TM), a system that combines personally chosen aroma and color. Aveda Key Element(TM) aromas, created with blends of flower and plant essences, provide unique compositions of several plant-derived ingredients. Personally chosen aromas are then combined with Aveda Purescriptions(TM) Color Concentrates, customized for a client's specific needs. Purescriptions Color Concentrates offer clients color options and enhanced color deposition, with a light, medium or full color enhancement, when blended into shampoo and conditioner for at-home use. With Aveda Personal Blends, the customer can mix up to two colors into the Purescriptions Conditioner, plus the option of an aroma. Personal Blends are also available as perfumes! I love Aveda products and want to give my dad something from Aveda. What do you offer for men?

The Aveda Men products are the perfect addition to any daily routine with healthy grooming essentials for hair, skin and body. Other Aveda product lines such as our skin care and hair care are made for both sexes. Because our ingredients and aromas are made with plants, most Aveda products tend to be unisex.

I buy Chakras because they smell so good, but what does "chakra" mean?

The theory of the chakras has endured through centuries of time preserved in the passages of ancient ayurvedic medicinal texts. According to Ayurvedic tradition, the chakras reflect the body's seven energy, emotional and sensory centers. Chakra I is Motivation, Chakra II is Attraction, Chakra III is Equipoise, Chakra IV is Fulfillment, Chakra V is Creative, ChakraVI is Intuition, and Chakra VII is Bliss. The goal is to achieve balance in each of the centers for ultimate physical and spiritual well-being.
